Reusable Vapes Aren’t the Answer – Unless We Change How We Use Them
Around 844 million vapes are thrown away every year. That's globally. They contain lithium batteries, copper, semiconductors – all valuable stuff. Most of it ends up in landfills or incinerators.

Take lithium. The amount of lithium in those discarded vapes each year could make batteries for tens of thousands of electric cars. And here's the scary part – those batteries aren't completely dead. Studies show about 25% of discarded vape batteries still hold a charge above 2.5V. When they get crushed in garbage trucks or recycling plants? They short‑circuit and catch fire.
Nearly half of all vapers don't even know their devices can be recycled. Over 70% say no one ever told them how. In the past few years, fires linked to vape lithium batteries at waste sites have gone up by more than 70%.

So manufacturers started making rechargeable, pod‑based "reusable" vapes. But here's the catch. Many of those have pods that cost almost as much as a whole new device. So people just throw the whole thing away – again. A lot of "high‑puff" vapes can be charged, but the battery is welded inside. You can't take it out. End of story – into the trash.
On the plus side, some brands are doing better. They use removable batteries – you can pop them out and recycle them separately. Some shops now have collection bins. Bring back your old vape, get a discount or a small gift. Surveys show more than half of vapers would buy from a shop that offers recycling. And some hobbyists have taken apart hundreds of dead vapes, rebuilt the batteries, and used them for e‑bikes or home power storage. So yes, those "dead" batteries can have a second life.

But the reality is, the recycling fees on vapes are still way too low. Not nearly enough to build proper recycling systems. Experts say bans alone won't fix it. We need three things: removable battery designs, easy‑to‑find recycling drop‑offs, and real information for consumers.
The shift from disposable to reusable is the right direction. But it's still a long road. If we just change the name and the shell, and people still toss everything after one use, then it's just marketing, not real change.
Quick Q&A
Q: How do I know if a vape is actually eco‑friendly?
A: Two things. Can you easily take out the battery? Can you buy pods or juice separately at a fair price? If not, it's fake green.
Q: Where should I throw away my used vape?
A: Not in the regular bin. Take it to a vape shop collection box, an electronics recycling center, or check your local hazardous waste drop‑off.
Q: Why don't manufacturers just make all batteries removable?
A: Cost. And it's easier to make them sealed. But new regulations are pushing for removable batteries. It'll become the norm.
